STONEWALL JACKSON’S HORSE

Contributed by Linda Brake Meyers

Richmond Va.. March 14 - The flag at the Soldiers’ Home, near this city, is flying at half-mast today on account of the death of “Old Sorrel,” Stonewall Jackson’s war horse. This animal died there this morning at six o’clock. His death has been hourly expected for several days. Last night he was tenderly watched by _________ of the old Confederate veterans at the Home who followed Jackson during the war. Sorrel was 32 years old, rather below medium size. He was ridden by General Jackson during the war up to the time that Jackson received his mortal wound at Chancellorsville. The animal was twice wounded in engagements. Since the war no one has ever been permitted to mount him. He remained at the Virginia Military Institute at Lexington for some time. The frame of Old Sorrel is to be stuffed and mounted, and preserved at the Soldier’s Home. A Washington taxidermist is here for that purpose. March 20, 1886 "Weston Democrat"
