BENJAMIN LIGHTBOURNE/LIGHTBURN of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and his Descendants including the Families of HAYDEN, FELL, DUNN, DUCKETT, JOHNSON and HODSON
BENJAMIN LIGHTBOURNE/LIGHTBURN of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and his Descendants including the Families of HAYDEN, FELL, DUNN, DUCKETT, JOHNSON and HODSON

by Robert C. Lightburn and published by Gateway Press 2003 is 555 pages telling the story of the Lightburn family in America from their settlement on the Eastern Seaboard during colonial times, to their participation in our Revolution, through the Civil War where literally brother fought brother, and to their movement west after that conflict. It includes those who fought in WW I and II and the Korean War.

For more than a hundred years, Lewis County has proudly and rightfully hailed the memory of General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson who spent his boyhood years at his grandparent's homestead at Jackson's Mill and most people in the area know his story. Less known, but perhaps having more direct impact on the citizens of the region was Jackson's boyhood friend who also became a general - but for the Union - Joseph Benton Lightburn, Sr. He was ordained a minister before the War and afterward pastored Baptist congregations throughout the region.

The history of the Lightburns and their allied families is a history of America. Some are Mayflower descendants; two were candidates for President (Adlai Stevenson and Jsoeph Benton Lightburn Sr.); and one had their Colorado home win the Better Homes & Gardens contest in the Depression years.

This well-researched book includes footnotes, a bibiliography, and several pictures. Hardbound and fully indexed.

The Four Goff Brothers of Western Virginia
The Four Goff Brothers of Western Virginia

Phillip G. Goff and Roy L. Lockhart announce the publication of their book, The Four Goff Brothers of Western Virginia, which will ship in late September 2003. The book follows the lives of James, John Turton, Thomas and Salathiel Goff as they forged the western Virginia frontier in the 1770s. After sojourns into what are now Loudoun Co., Va. and Hardy Co., W.Va., the Goff brothers raised families in present-day Preston Co., W.Va.; Tucker Co., W.Va. and Clark Co., Ky. Building on 40 years of research by Lockhart, the authors in 1999 embarked on a quest to uncover and examine every contemporary reference to these four pioneering brothers. Scouring public and private archives from Massachusetts to Florida, Lockhart and Goff identified nearly 1,400 documents from 1766 to 1833 pertaining to the four Goff brothers. The book takes care to include all known slave references and to index their names. Some of the slaves of John Gray (d. ca. 1769) of Calvert Co. probably were given to his daughters Elizabeth Sheredine Gray and Margaret Gray when they married Salathiel Goff and Thomas Goff, respectively. These men, women and children probably migrated with the Goff brothers from Calvert Co., Md. to present-day Tucker Co., W.Va. and Clark Co., Ky. where they lived out their lives. With 400+ pages and nearly 2,300 footnotes, this hardbound book is divided into three parts. The first section recounts how the Goff brothers conquered the wilderness of western Virginia in search of land. The book continues with a genealogy of the Goff brothers, beginning with what is known about their parents and proceeding through their over 250 grandchildren born between 1792 and 1861. The book concludes with documentary appendices, including key court cases and surviving wills of three of the Goff brothers.

The Sycamore's Seedlings: A Genealogy of Samuel Pringle
The Sycamore's Seedlings: A Genealogy of Samuel Pringle

Jerry Pringle. Samuel Pringle was the first settler near present day Buckhannon, WV. His home was the cavity of a Sycamore tree at the mouth of Turkey Run. This Sycamore, the first truly prefab, was about 11 feet across and on Indian land where white men had never tread. Taking care so Indian hunting parties would not notice his presence, he lived off the land without the benefits settlements or condiments offer. Living about 200 miles from any community, his brother, rifle, and forest animals were his only companions to lessen the loneliness those isolated years. The tree is a third generation Sycamore; named the "Pringle Tree" it is a historical monument. This book follows Samuel’s descendents as they grow and build their families. The author has advanced degrees in Management and Human Relations. Trained as an investigator and analyst, he has many years of experience putting together cases from information obtained through interview and found in documents. He is an eighth generation grandson who, after retirement, decided to apply those skills to the genealogy of Samuel Pringle. 289 pages. Softbound and indexed.
