These early landowners
in Harrison County (1796-1806) as recorded in the land tax books of the county
and copied by the WPA in the 1930s. Harrison County then included all or some
of what is now Harrison, Lewis, Upshur, Taylor, Marion, Braxton, Gilmer,
Doddridge, Ritchie, and Calhoun counties. These specific files were created
from the WPA records on file in the West Virginia Archive and History Library
by a member of HCPD. As today, land taxes were collected the year after they
were levied, i.e., property taxed in 1796 was owned by the taxpayer in 1795.
Because of variant name spellings, read
each name. Do not use the "find" command.
